For years now, adventure storytellers have relied on the DJI Mavic as a key piece of equipment in their kits. This is mainly because of its decent imaging and collapsible design. Nowadays, content creators can essentially fit a complete filmmaking setup into a single backpack: camera, lenses, sound kit, and a drone. So let’s take a look. Is this the best drone for adventure storytelling?
As with everything in tech, it just keeps getting better.
DJI just unveiled its new model, the highly anticipated Mavic 3. It has great camera specs, combined with a bunch of new flight modes. This drone is definitely raising the bar and we believe it is officially now in that prosumer category.
But first, we want to comment on the complete redesign: it has a darker paint scheme, the entire chassis is new, and the battery compartment is located on the rear instead of on top. In addition, all of the limbs and blades are longer than the previous model, improving aerodynamics.
2 models, the main difference, and some specs
The Mavic 3 is effectively the base model with 8GB of internal storage, and the Mavic 3 Cine supports Apple ProRes 422 HQ and comes with 1TB of internal storage.
Imaging: Both models can film in 4K up to 120fps and capture 20MP photos. In addition to the main 24mm lens, there is also a hybrid zoom lens capable of 28x digital zoom. In focal length terms, that equals 162mm at f/4.4. However, in our testing, we found going beyond 4x made the imagery too distorted.
Batteries: Both models have batteries rated for up to 46 minutes of hovering flight time, which is an upgrade over the Mavic 2’s 31-minute battery.
How could the Mavic 3 impact nature, conservation, outdoor, and adventure storytelling?
We have yet to fly it, but we had a hands-on yesterday and we like the new design and configuration. When collapsed, the cover that wraps the camera, gimbals, and propellers is compact and functional. DJI has put a lot of thought into the charging and battery system which should extend flight time considerably. Even the carrying bag is well-thought-out, with pockets for the batteries, filters, and accessories.
If you’re looking to upgrade to the newest model or want to add an areal perspective to your films, the DJI Mavic 3 should provide the imaging that you’re looking for, and most importantly it’s still easy to pack and go.
